Round Pedestal Table with Thuya Burl Top on Elm Column Base English Circa 1810

List: $4,500

An early 19th century English round pedestal table with a striking thuya burl top [1. Thuya is a hard, dark, reddish-brown wood native to North Africa, showing a swirling, almost marbled appearance. It takes a high polish and is used for cabinetwork.  The ancient Greeks and Chinese used Thuya and it was a popular veneer in 18th and 19th century England. *
The prized Thuya burl is a dense and hard wood found buried underground. It is noted for its unique patterns, including eyes, knots, and complex grain structures. It can be worked and polished to a high finish, revealing its stunning grain patterns. The wood also has a pleasant, cedar-like fragrance. Thuya burl was used for high-end furniture, veneer, and inlay work–and was a favored material for luxury items.
