Description
An unassuming late 19th-century French hexagonal-shaped walnut merchant’s table circa 1870, of unique design with a double-sided drawer for discreet “under the table” exchanges of money and goods; on bracket feet with cross-stretcher and a diamond-shaped lower shelf. The table’s hexagonal top is bordered by a gallery rail and has a rich, warm patina showing desirable antique wear.
Merchant tables like this were commonly used in shops and markets and were designed to facilitate efficient and secure transactions.
