George III Satinwood Box with Rounded Top, English, Circa 1790

List: $2,500

A George III period satinwood veneered box with a domed lid and rectangular form. The front features two oval medallions inlaid with neoclassical urn motifs composed of various colored woods, displaying finely detailed marquetry typical of late 18th-century English decorative arts. The edges of the lid and front panel are accented by narrow filets of boxwood and tulipwood, delineating the box's contours. A kite-shaped escutcheon surrounds a working lock accompanied by a key. The polished interior is finished in oak and remains unpartitioned. The reverse side is undecorated, emphasizing the subtle grain pattern and the warm tone of the satinwood veneer. English, circa 1790
