Description

An early 19th-century English box in solid satinwood featuring starburst and geometric inlays of ebony and boxwood. Ebony edging outlines all exterior edges, accented at each corner by fan-shaped (“bat wing”) marquetry. The box’s lid exhibits a diamond-shaped central motif and detailed linear inlay reminiscent of “candy cane” patterns executed in boxwood, ebony, and mahogany. The kite-shaped escutcheon, also in ebony, complements the geometric aesthetic. Inside, the fitted interior reveals a removable satinwood tray containing twelve hardwood compartments, each with lids of varying geometric shapes, contrasting in tones of ebony, mahogany, and satinwood. Additional storage space lies beneath this tray; with working lock and key. English, circa 1820.
